Jevons Paradox: Perhaps Not a Paradox After All

Make an engine burn less coal, and a country burns more coal. Build a car that sips fuel, and people drive further. Give the world cheaper computing, and demand for it explodes. This is the Jevons Paradox, and it has puzzled economists for more than 150 years. In the sixth episode of Vantage Point, Eli Amdur does something the paradox invites but rarely receives. He hangs a question mark on it.

The result is a short episode with a long reach, because the question underneath the Jevons Paradox is no longer academic. It sits at the center of the fastest technological adoption in human history.

What Is the Jevons Paradox?

The idea takes its name from the 19th century British economist William Stanley Jevons, who noticed something strange in 1865. As steam engines became more efficient in their use of coal, Britain did not consume less coal. It consumed more. Efficiency, the intuitive path to conservation, produced the opposite of conservation.

Stated plainly, Eli’s version is this: “When something becomes more efficient to use, people often use more of it, not less.”

That sounds like a contradiction, which is why it has kept the label “paradox” for so long. But a paradox is only a paradox until you find the frame that dissolves it. Eli’s episode is an argument that the frame already exists. We have just been looking for it in the wrong discipline.

Hard Science Keeps the Paradox Intact

Economists, Eli notes, work in a data-driven hard science, and hard science tends to keep the Jevons Paradox stubbornly intact. When you measure only inputs and outputs, efficiency and consumption, the pattern looks like a genuine contradiction. The numbers rise when logic says they should fall.

But the numbers are not the whole story. They are the residue of something the numbers do not capture, which is the behavior of the people doing the consuming.

Soft Science Finds the Explanation in Us

Turn to the soft sciences, and the paradox begins to look less like a paradox and more like a portrait. Here Eli reaches for Freud, and for the id, ego, and superego. The framework recasts the puzzle as an old human tension between what we want, what is possible, and what we tell ourselves we ought to do.

Put another way, the Jevons Paradox is really the conflict between could we and should we. “Every human discovery or invention has brought with it the conflict between could we and should we,” Eli says. Efficiency lowers the cost of the could, and human nature does the rest.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle understood this long before the data economists did. As Eli quotes him: “While the individual man is an insoluble puzzle, in the aggregate he becomes a mathematical certainty.” You cannot predict which driver will take the longer route, or which company will spin up more servers. But you can predict, with something close to certainty, that the aggregate will consume more. As Eli puts it: “The certainty here is human nature.”

This is why the soft reading matters. “Examining the human psyche doesn’t resolve the conflicts, but it does explain them.” That is a modest claim, and an honest one. Understanding why we behave this way does not free us from it. It only lets us see it clearly.

What This Means for AI

If the Jevons Paradox held for coal and cars and cloud computing, AI is where it stops being a paradox and becomes a near certainty.

Eli’s sharpest turn in the episode is here. “Whereas every human invention brought the conflict between could we and should we, with AI that’s no longer in question. The question is how far and how fast.” The should we debate, for better or worse, has largely been overtaken by events. What remains is a question of direction and velocity.

To measure that, Eli offers a simple instrument: “Nature, pace, and scope are the three dimensions of measurement of progress.” Nature is what a technology is. Pace is how fast it arrives. Scope is how widely it reaches. Every one of those dials is turned up further with AI than with anything before it.

Pace alone is staggering. “When the printing press hit in 1450, it took about 50 years to spread across Europe. When OpenAI hit, it took 10 minutes for a million people to sign up.” The printing press reshaped civilization over half a century. AI gathered its first million users in the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee. When something that transformative is also that efficient to adopt, the Jevons pattern does not just apply. It accelerates.

What the Great Minds Add

Around this central argument, Eli weaves the counsel of thinkers who spent their lives on the human side of the ledger.

From Harold Geneen, a caution against the fantasy that leadership can be handed over like a manual: “Leadership can never be taught. It can only be learned.” Leadership, like the wisdom to weigh could against should, is earned in the doing.

From Thomas J. Watson, a reminder that agency is available immediately: “If you want to do excellent work, you can begin right now by deciding to do excellent work.” No efficiency gain required. Just decision.

And the episode carries What If lessons drawn from these same figures, along with the idea that “readiness is more important than experience.” In a moment defined by pace and scope, readiness may be the only real preparation available.

The Habit Worth Keeping

The whole episode is, in a sense, a demonstration of its own thesis. Quoting George Bernard Shaw, Eli reminds us that “it’s a good idea from time to time to hang a question mark on things we have long taken for granted.” The Jevons Paradox was one of those things. Question it, and you find not a contradiction in the world but a consistency in ourselves.

That is the invitation. Efficiency will keep improving. Our appetite will keep answering. The useful work is not pretending otherwise, but seeing clearly, so that should we still gets a hearing even when could we has already run ahead.
